LE RECTUM: To start, can you introduce yourself quickly for those who don't know you?
MAVADO CHARON: Mavado Charon, delighted! Artist, comic book author and draftsman, but I specify that it is not my job (I am a graphic designer). I'm a cis guy and I've been living in Nantes almost forever.
When did you start drawing? Then to articulate your drawings in the form of a story?
Like everyone else, I've been drawing since childhood, but unlike many people, I didn't stop drawing when I was a teenager, and I've continued to draw until today!
What are your primary artistic influences, the ones that made you decide to start producing?
I remember being very disturbed by reading Guillaume Apollinaire's "11,000 yards" when I must have been about twelve years old (even today it is a very powerful pornographic book for me, which I recommend to everyone !). I also had a lot of emotions in front of a picture book which reproduced sculptures of men jerking off, dating from the time of Roman antiquity (it was given to me by a 6th grade history teacher). Still in my pre-teens, I was finally very impressed by reading the magazine "L'écho des savanes" which in the 80s gave pride of place to the Italian authors of the punk comic magazine "Frigidaire".
Do you have the reference of this book that your history teacher lent you? I'm very interested!
Ah no, alas, three times alas, impossible to remember exactly the format or the publishing house of this book! I would very much like to get my hands on it again, but I only have a vague (even if powerful) memory of it. But since these are ancient works, no doubt it's fairly well listed and it should be possible to find it. In any case, if Internet users know of an equivalent picture book, I would like the reference!
When and how did you discover your homosexuality?
There was no "discovery" of homosexuality in me, everything happened very slowly and very gradually. Let's say that I started by having a heterosexuality, and that little by little, my gay fantasies took a majority place in my libido. For a long time I dated girls, when I only watched gay porn. Even today I am in a relationship with a woman, with whom we practice polyamory, but next to this "base relationship" I only orient myself towards male partners.
More specifically, when did you start drawing naked guys?
I think it must have been about fifteen years ago when I started working with this pseudonym, "Mavado Charon". I've been looking for an interesting way to draw gay porn for a long time, but it wasn't until I discovered this improvised ballpoint pen drawing technique that I really started to get into it!

Do you have other projects, even secret projects?
My main project today is a series of large drawings on old sheets, which I am making for an important exhibition which will take place in Paris, in April 2023, at the Art's Factory gallery. These drawings are illustrations of the book of the Mexican poet Luis Felipe Fabre: "La sodomía en la Nueva España". It's a project that was prompted to me by the Spanish publisher "Frac de Medusas", which has unfortunately ceased its activity today. I also have "secret projects", in the sense that I haven't talked about them yet, such as reproducing the original roll of Sade's "120 Days of Sodom", in the form of a huge strip of drawn paper ... Maybe for 2024?

With Frac de Medusas, you had already done Eros Armado in 2017, again based on a text, Héros by Denis Jampen. How do you work with these texts? Does inspiration come from your personal reading or is the path more trivialized?
It's very rare that I illustrate a text, in general I am content to draw inspiration from the atmosphere of a written work (those of Sade, William Burroughs, Tony Duvert etc). But with "Frac de Medusas", I twice worked very precisely from a text. It must be said that Octavio, the publisher, is very learned, and he introduced me to a lot of great authors and books! For the "Héros" by Denis Jampen, it's a book that I discovered alone, listening to a 3-minute vignette on France Culture completely by chance! The encounter with a landmark book is sometimes so unexpected…

My first encounter with your drawings was in 2014 when The Soft Pink Truth released their album Why Do the Heathen Rage? which you made the cover. In 2012 you had already done the EP cover by Exclamation Point. How did these collaborations come about?
At that time, I was impressed to see how the projects followed one another, without me taking the slightest step! As soon as I started uploading my work signed "Mavado", I had the impression of an immediate success. Very quickly I was noticed by the editors of the legendary US magazine "Butt Magazine" (first Billy Miller, then Adam Baran), then I had drawings published in the magazine "Monstre" led by Tim Madesclaire and Philippe Joanny, and from there I regularly received proposals for collaboration, generally by email, without necessarily meeting the people I work with.

How did you come to draw this kind of post-apocalyptic orgies? Is there a link with your fantasies? your actual sexual practices? or do you separate the two completely?
Most of my porn drawings correspond to fantasies, since I can't imagine drawing "ass" without being turned on by what I'm doing. Let's say it's a bit of a double reward: having the pleasure of the creator who puts lines on paper AND has a hard-on! I also like to push the limits, and draw things that are not allowed in porn, like sex scenes with people being slaughtered, being mutilated, fucking with corpses... My sexuality is fall behind my fantasies (and maybe that's a good thing). But it is still evolving towards more varied and intense practices, even if for the moment I am still very vanilla!
The SM scene can be seen from a very wide angle: from pure aesthetics to brutality and devotion to sometimes very blurred limits. Are you close, even involved in this scene?
Not for now, but I'm starting to have contacts, through the small world of polyamory. Right now I'm in great excitement to discover new people and new practices, I hope to make friends in the BDSM scene soon!

This weekend was the Darklands festival in Antwerp. How do you view this kind of event?
As I was saying, for a long time I worked with people I didn't meet. I don't like to travel too much, but probably also that I was quite intimidated. But there again, I move a lot in my life at the moment and I hope to set foot in this kind of event very soon, and to make my work known there! Recently I was exhibited in Berlin, in a former women's prison, and the photos I saw of the opening made me regret not having made the trip!

You worked with a bunch of different actors from the cultural milieu. Between publications, exhibitions and events under your different aliases, you navigated between the underground, the general public and the institutional. Do you feel more comfortable in certain situations?
I have long been very comfortable in cultural circles, such as literary meetings, book festivals... but the more it goes, the more it swells me. Today, I mainly hang out in queer circles, and I really like the queer dykes I meet there. In fact, I think that where I feel really comfortable today is on the dance floor of a good electro club, like the ones I frequent in Nantes (the Macadam, the CO2... ).
How is your work received by the public? Does it remain confined to a small informed audience or does curiosity work?
For the moment, we can say that I am in a niche, but that I feel very good there. I have always been surprised to see how my work was perceived: despite the violence of most of my scenes, the underlying humor is well perceived, and I love seeing people laughing while looking at my drawings in exhibitions ! The work I do today for Art's Factory is less explicitly porn, and maybe that will open up my work to other amateurs.
La bite et la couteau (Cotoreich, 2015) was printed using an alcohol duplicator, Slug Fest (Les Crocs Electriques, 2017) was printed on yellow paper and color drawings, Ballets Roses (La Belle Epoque, 2017 ) was printed in black, white and pink, Tony Duvert on Grindr (Re:Surgo!, 2016) was printed in fluorescent orange ink, the cover of Holy Hole (Les Crocs Electriques, 2019) was printed in blue, pink and black on transparent paper. To what extent are you interested in technical experimentation (supports, inks, renderings, techniques used)?
I find that my work is sometimes a little repetitive (basically, I draw scenes of gay porn orgies with a ballpoint pen) and the change of technique, format, printing is essential for me to give new blood at my work ! it allows me to approach each book project with a fresh eye, and to inject diversity into my work.

I have a weakness for your drawings using color. What place does color (or even the printing process in general) have in your production?
Color has never had much place in my work. I manage to be somewhat satisfied with certain works, like the "Ballets Roses" series made with pink watercolor pencils, but often I am very unhappy with them. Like for example what I did for "Slugfest", published by Les Crocs Électriques: it's really bad coloring! Despite everything, there is a coloring technique that I like, but which takes a very long time to implement and which therefore I don't use much: I color with gray pencils on layers, and then I superimpose the layers on the computer, giving color values to the different grays. In particular, I made a large poster with this technique, which should appear at the same time as my next book "Thurd", but, like I refuse to spend too much time behind a computer, it is a process that I cannot develop too much.

Oh yes, and I in return can say that his videos totally fascinate me. I already find fisting to be a magnificent practice, which transcends sex so much and pushes the limits of the body, but Axel Abysse's graphic research (fluo, dripping fluids, the variety and size of his dildos ...) affect me even more. A great ass artist!

In 2018, your book Dirty (Mania Press), won the de Sade prize for art books. How did the book come into the hands of the jury, how did you receive the news and what did this prize bring you?
As a big lover of erotic and deviant books, it's a price I've known for a long time. And since the release of "Dirty", published by Mania Press, was a major event for me, I immediately wanted to submit it to the jury. I had the immense luck of being pre-selected to apply, and the even more incredible chance of having the "Sade Prize for the 2018 art book"! I know that it was not without difficulty, and that the book had to be defended tooth and nail by certain members of the Jury, such as the editor Laurence Viallet, whose work is immense (it is to her that the we owe in particular the publication in France of the book "Hogg", a porno-filthy literary monument by Samuel Delany). Afterwards, the prizes only bring the value that we want to put in them, but I think it is the highest distinction that my work will ever be able to claim! And I'm happy that it also rewards the excellent Mania editions, and its director Sylvain Gérand, who was certainly the first to have "unearthed" me in my youth.

Do you think one day to make your characters speak within your stories?
Technically, it is quite possible, since I have already signed talking comics under another name (in particular "Bite Fighter" and "Héroïque Fantaisie" at Les Requins Marteaux Editions which have a fairly similar gay-porn theme of my work as "Mavado Charon"). But I know that I quickly tend to make my characters talkative in comics, and we very quickly move away towards something else. Right now I'm mostly concerned with questions of composition and representation with my drawing, and I want to stay in the pure image, without text and almost without narration.

You are currently selling originals of your drawings published in the PUS fanzine. Can you introduce us to this zine and the collaboration that was born between both of you?
On the PUS fanzine, I don't have a lot to say, it's a collective of dirty/porn images just the way I like them. As with my other collaborations, I haven't met his editor, and I know very little about his project, but he's a graphic designer who I find very talented. I really like the way he has to dress the drawings in his mockups, and it's completely unique, I've never seen zines so successful at this level.

Since your first Charonian drawings, how do you view your past productions? Do you have any regrets? desires for the years to come?
Regrets no, except maybe not having met enough of the people I worked with (but I don't fly, it doesn't help to meet Americans or Japanese either!) desires for the years to come, I have a lot on the other hand! This is just the beginning…

| Illustration by André Masson for Story of the Eye (Georges Bataille, 1928) |
Are you aware of the lithographic work of André Masson to illustrate the Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille in 1928? What connection do you have with the artists who preceded you on these subjects (interest, collection, research)? On those who succeed you or will succeed you?
So I don't know this illustration in particular, but it interests me a lot (it reminds me of the old engravings that illustrated Sade's books in the 18th/19th century editions). In general I have always been extremely interested in erotic art, especially in its drawn form. I have quite a few books covering erotic art from several eras, from ancient China to medieval Japan via Hans Bellmer, Pascin, etc. up to contemporary authors, such as Toshio Saeki, the painter Bastille, Tom of Finland, Martin of Holland and Tom of Pékin. I try to stay curious about everything, and I find it beautiful when a painted or drawn work manages to excite me like a text or a porn movie.
After the records, you are doing a book cover: Aktivistovi zapisi by Brane Mozetic. Can you introduce us to its author and this book? How did you get in touch? Is a French or English translation planned?
He contacted me directly on Facebook to use one of my drawings he had fallen on to make the cover of his book.
I know that he is a very famous author of current Slovenian literature, and apparently his works deal with rawness and lyricism with homosexuality and violence, and with loneliness in our contemporary world. Alas, I couldn't find anything by him translated into French, and I couldn't read the book he sent me.
Let's talk politics. Are you personally involved (not necessarily in a party, maybe only on a few specific issues)? Do you consider Mavado Charon's production to be politically engaged?
I don't think I'm political enough. I would like to be more in the fight and get involved, but I believe that I am very withdrawn into my fantasies and my work, despite my desire to open up to others. I think this says that all worthwhile artistic work is political, and I hope what I say in my drawings will have some significance...but I'm not sure.
What are your latest artistic slaps (all media combined)?
I really liked the essay " Enculé !" published by Les Grillages. Not too long ago I also got my hands on a book presenting the complete Pierre Molinier, and I love how he mixed his work, his life and his libido.
